OK, now I am total clueless, We are running NetServer on my V4.3 AS400, with NT workstation on my PC's with a Ethernet connection using Novell 4.11, "AND I CANNOT GET THIS THING TO WORK!!!!". Our support people, Level One Tech Support , helped me set up one of my test PC's with NETBEUI (not NETBIOS) and it will find the server and let me assign a drive to it but only when the profile matches on the AS400 and the PC, I have the server name and the AS400 name in the HOSTS file, I have the server name in LMHOSTS, I have just 5250 CA400 Express, with the brand new SF57098 service pack on and that works great, I EVEN added a GUEST profile to NetServer,(ya I know, bad, bad, bad, as a security consultant I know the implications, but the only thing that I have shared is QDLS because that is the only thing that I need) and it still won't work. Now here is the weird part, when I log into the PC 'locally' EVERYTHING WORKS!, but as soon as I log into Novell no go. This tells me that it has something to do with Novell, maybe it doesn't support it? Any Clues? Don't make me use uppercase... ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: RE: Netserver and Profiles Author: Eric Sundell PMI Date: 7/20/99 12:17 PM We are using Windows NT workstation, I just got your AS/400 Letter today so I got a few things to try, I never saw the HOST entry in any of the books. Thanks-EDS PS: I rember going to one of your seminar's a few years back when you showed that 2600 that I was in, I just read the artical you mentioned in Sept issue, your right, nothing of any substance in there. Be nice tho, some of us aren't all bad Hee-Hee ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: Re: Netserver and Profiles Author: "Roger Pence" [SMTP:rp@rogerpence.com] Date: 7/20/99 10:37 AM Eric-- > According to the Client Access Express Redbook, if your profile for Windows > differs from your AS400 profile you will be prompted for your profile and > password. This is not happening. I must create a profile and password that > matches on both systems. Read the manual again. Only NT Server and NT Workstation will prompt for a user name. Unless you're using guest profiles (which probably isn't something you want to do), the user name (but not the password) MUST be the same for Win9X in both environments. > Also unless I install Operational Navigator or > NetBEUI, > I can see it when I search for it however when I try to access it says "Not > accessible, wrong handle". I'm a little new to this anyone have a little > insight? Do you have a HOSTS table entry for your NetServer name? If you are using DNS, put a DNS entry in it for NetServer. Make sure NetServer is started (using OpsNav or with the API call as shown at the URLs below). Even when it's working, NetServer won't always show up in your Network Neighborhood (even in my simple network with a single subnet, it never shows up). Has to do with NetBIOS (not NetBEUI) and the way it broadcasts server announcments. No matter though, simply right click "Network Neighborhood" and search for your NetServer name (by default, Q + system name). Then make shortcuts to it as needed. You don't need _any_ of CA/400 on a Win client to use NetServer. You do, though, need the MS networking client. You will need at least CA/400 base and OpsNav installed on one administrator's desktop to manage and administer NetServer. www.as400.ibm.com/netserver is full of NetServer info. Also, check this site out for lots of NetServer info (really the same info, but presented differently) http://as400.rochester.ibm.com/netserver/articles/rzahlmst02.htm One last thing: wanna break NetServer, try copying a folder from your PC to a mapped NetServer drive with an embedded space in its name! rp +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
