As of V4xx all of the AS/400 server side code and a free client is included
in the base OS.  This was necessary for IBM to do when the started depending
on the Oooops Navigator (some functions like NAT and IP filtering are only
available via Ooops Nav).  So without buying CA/400 you can run 5250 clients
(I'm not clear on exactly which client, but I think its the screen scraped
graphics client -- the Seagull thing) and Ooops Navigator, as well as the
console without CA/400.  If you want the nice PC5250 terminals and printer
support, you have to pay!

Also, the NETServer is built-in, at least at V4R3 and above which enables
any Windows 95,98, or NT PC to access files on the 400 via Network
Neighborhood and do printer sharing with AS/400 printers.

This is all in there for free.

So bottom line what you absolutely do NOT get is PC/5250 the nice green
screen.

Boy I didn't think this was that hard of a question....   A week later and
still
no takers?

Let me try to restate.

What part(2) of Client Access _must_ be on the AS/400 in order to connect?
I
thought that there was some base code that the /400 must have, and then in a
eparate LPP the client code is also stored on the /400 (for downloading).
But
this client code is not required for daily operation?!?

Does anyone know?
