I am also self taught..... Makes me wonder how many of us there are
in our sector of IS. I started as a junior programmer for a local
bank DP shop while in high school. Again, lack of appropriate
compensation was one of the biggest problems I faced at that
     company.

Just an observation about the shops I've worked at. None of them
have EVER offered, or even considered to send me (or anyone) to
class. No technical seminars, no in-house skills tutorials,
nothing. I've had to teach myself everything, and while I am proud
of what I have accomplished, I feel a little short changed by the
whole deal. I do feel that being self taught has had MANY positive
benefits (I understand the concepts better after much trial and
error), but I still feel that my employers are reaping the benefit
of my (sometimes torturous) endeavors, without even recognition of
my effort. I realize this biz we're in is in a constant state of
change, and that for one to be successful, one must stay current
with the technology. Ultimately, I'll still be working, but I still
wish my employer was willing to help me get better.

Ok, so much for that rant.....

I'm a self taught programmer myself. RPG, COBOL and system admin. here for
the AS400. I would have loved to have the opportunity to take some courses,
and I could probably still use some courses but need all my time just to
keep up the demands of the job right now. I'm in a small company so there is
no one to 'turkey' with, that's why I like this midrange group!

I was answering the "phones" and taught myself to program(well Im still
learning) with VB doing nothing but Client Server for AS/400.(DDE and
Active X)
Our in house programmer left :so I learnt by buying a ton of books and
cuting and pasting bits of his source code into my projects, got to work
and then when over each line to I understood how it worked.
No teacher or courses.
