Ok its time I added my two cents.  I took courses in Basic, Fortran, Cobol,
and assembly.  I learned RPG when the company I worked for switched from a
MP/M Business Basic II machine to an AS400 and MAPICS/DB.  I could not
believe how many ptf's had to be applied to MAPICS.  When the fix I needed
was not available, I started to read the source code.  I taught myself CL
and RPG.  Later I changed jobs and start to work at an AS400 Software
Developer where I went through IBM's education courses on the 400.  10 years
later I am programming modules in RPGLE, calling procedures written in C for
a TCP/IP socket application.  Yes you can grow your own programmers,
especially if they know your business and have the aptitude and discipline.
