Answer is it depends.  Depends on definition of myfield.

You see, the GROUP variable is a character field by virtue of the fact
that it is a group item.

So if the myfield is not a character field, the SQL pre-compiler may not
be able to make the conversion.

Only way around this would be to define an item as the same type as
myfield and then use the group item to redefine it.
