We had a similar problem here.  There is a PTF from IBM to assist.  In
addition, my partner in crime had to change three timeout values (to make
longer delays):  in the AS/400 object, in the JetDirect card, and in the
printer itself.

Once the PTF and the changes were made our printers settled down and
behaved themselves.
