M Hello Brad, Oh yes! I had thought that was obvious. I guess not. RPG sees the database field at its maximum size plus 2 bytes for the length -- which is at the beginning of the field. You have to tell database how much data the field really contains. You could try experimenting with declaring the field in your program as VARYING and let RPG manage the length bytes. Regards, Simon Coulter. «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» «» FlyByNight Software AS/400 Technical Specialists «» «» Eclipse the competition - run your business on an IBM AS/400. «» «» «» «» Phone: +61 3 9419 0175 Mobile: +61 0411 091 400 «» «» Fax: +61 3 9419 0175 mailto: shc@flybynight.com.au «» «» «» «» Windoze should not be open at Warp speed. «» «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» //--- forwarded letter ------------------------------------------------------- > X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) > Date: Mon, 17 May 99 09:42:10 -0500 > From: "Stone, Brad V (TC)" <bvstone@taylorcorp.com> > To: "'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com'" <MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com> > Reply-To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com > Subject: RE: VARLEN field... what good are they? > > I think I got it figured out. > > I actually have to place the length of the field in the first two bytes. > What a hassle!
