Modify your first example as below and it will do what I think you want.  I've
used a separate pointer for basing the DS in case you need to maintain
addressability to the header portion of the space.  This is the normal method
for coding the function that you are describing.


 D APIdatastructure  DS          Based(DSPtr)



 C         Eval      DSPtr = SpcPtr
 C         DO    Noofdataitems

 C         EXSR PROCES
Process Data Item
 C         Eval DSPtr = DSPtr + NextItemOffset
Set Var to Next Data Item
 C         Enddo
