You deal with this in one of two (main) ways.  Put the keyword CONST on the
Proto parm and then use FieldName + X'00' as the parameter (even better - use
%TrimL(FieldName) + X'00').  Alternatively you can use the Options(*String) on
the parm which will do it for you if what the C routine expects is a pointer.
You can also make use of the BIF %STR to switch between C type strings and RPG.
