  • Subject: RE: Help: LAN printer without messages

We have 10 printers connected over IP; 6 on the LAN, 4 on WAN. All are
Optras. I wrote a clp to start the writers and to prevent most messages to
make things easier fot the operations staff.

StrPrtWtr Dev(Fornax) FormType(*All *NoMsg) +
            Align(*File)
MonMsg CPF3310
MonMsg CPF3347

The monmsg allow the clp to ignore the writer if it is already started. We
use this in our IPL startup procedure and on an occasional command line use
to restart a printer.

We also added the following message to our System Reply list with R as the
answer. When ever the printer needs to have a paper jam cleared or just
needs to be fed, it would send this message. If it was not answered quickly,
the writer would terminate. We chose to add this to the reply list and to
set the printers to beep continously until their needs were met. (Made the
users cranky for a while, but I haven't had many writers end either ;-)

     CPA403D 99 Operator action required on device &4 (C R).

For us, we also changed the activation timer to 2550 and the inactivity
timer to 30 minutes. Otherwise the AS/400 would end the writer if it didn't
get an immediate response (ie the printer was busy doing a windows print
job).
