Pat,

Since you asked! :

In the *really* bad old days you used a terminal (like a 5250, etc).
with a special receptacle in the keyboard cable to send data to a 5250
application on the AS/400, which then processed it or wrote to
transaction file. It worked but was kludgy. If any of the data got
misaligned or bad data got in the data stream the 5250 application would
fail. There were also some PC-based solutions that buffered the devices
before sending the data to the AS/400 using Client Access. But the PCs
were hard to manage from the data center. If there were errors on the PC
they were not visible to the AS/400.

We created our Alliance SerialConnect product to work with just this
type of device. It uses a hardware device that supports up to 4 serial
devices, and communicates with the AS/400 over an Ethernet LAN using
TCP/IP. The configuration is done from the AS/400 side, errors are
reported to the AS/400 operator, and the whole thing is managed from the
AS/400. More information at: http://www.patownsend.com
