We use the IBM 3995 direct attached optical Libraries (8 libraries and over 800
platters) connected to a model 640 AS/400. We run the IBM OnDemand product
and have over 13 million reports stored to optical. Performance is excellent
when retrieving data from optical, of course it is not as fast as from DASD.
Performance is relative to standard AS/400 guidelines such as speed of CPU,
amount of memory, type of DASD, and type of IOP (6534 or 6521). LAN attached
libraries are much slower than direct attached optical libraries and we have
experienced other issues with the LAN attached.

AS/400 Technical Support

Is anyone doing optical storage on the AS/400? We are looking at
several imaging solutions, some of which are on the AS/400. I am
concerned about the performance impact. Any help would be appreciated.
If this is off topic for the list, please email me directly.

TIA
Mary :-)
