Along these same lines, I'm curious what the various vendors are
planning to do regarding LPAR.  For instance, right now one of our
machines is an S20 with two processors.  With LPAR I could turn it
into two smaller AS/400's.  I assume that each of these logical
machines would have the same serial number?  That means I can now run
two instances of a licensed product where before I could run only one.
If the vendor software allows me to do this, then depending on the
cost of the software, I could come out much cheaper buying one large
AS/400 and partitioning it in two instead of buying two smaller
equivalent AS/400's with different serial numbers.  You could take
this even further with a 4-way and four logical machines.  Actually,
the hardware cost might be cheaper too, but the savings on the
software could really add up to a tremendous amount.
