The arguement is that your are adding in an additional step(s). The point of the original post was that the guy's Management did not want them doing any additional work. Yes, i do understand that this is really no big deal and that IV is better then III. Unfortunately, as we are all aware, we sometimes have to do what we are told by the boss....(I really, really hated writing that last sentance!!!!) "If the Software Vendor has a really great product with very little problems then my point is mute and conversion would be understandable." Please point out to me the spelling and or grammatical errors in the above....I love to learn new and exciting things, except, of course, RPGIV, RPGLE and JAVA :) ). -----Original Message----- From: owner-midrange-l@midrange.com [mailto:owner-midrange-l@midrange.com]On Behalf Of david.kahn@gbwsh.mail.abb.com Sent: Wednesday, March 24, 1999 2:24 AM To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: IBM pushing Java "Mark Willett" <oleblighty@home.com> wrote: >It is a argument for not converting to IV. If you have modified a program you are faced with the task of reapplying your mods whenever the vendor produces a new version. Why is it harder to to re-apply your mods to an RPG/IV version of the vanilla than an RPG/III version? Simply run the new version through the converter, compare with your modded source, and re-apply. You never even need to look at the RPG/III version. >If the Software Vendor has a really great product with very little problems >then my point is mute and conversion would be understandable. Actually, if you rarely need to touch the source then there's less benefit from converting. The conversion is primarily to help you work on it. Incidentally I usually avoid spelling and grammar flames but I can't resist the idea of your point remaining mute. :-) >That is usually not the case (in my experience).
