You can do things like this with [f/s]printf() - 

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <decimal.h>

int main()
{
  decimal(6,2) dec1 = 1234.67d;

  /* old style, need to know details */
  printf("The decimal = %D(6,2)\n", dec1);

  /* new style, can print any decimal */
  printf("The decimal = %*.*D(*,*)\n",
          6, 2, digitsof(dec1), precisionof(dec1), dec1);

  return 0;
}

This way, you can code the [f/s]printf() without having to know the
details of each decimal type.
