OPNQRYF - merging files.

I got asked an OPNQRYF question today that I'm forwarding to those who
know more about this beast than I. How do you use OPNQRYF to merge
several files in a sort of dynamic multi-format logical? A colleague has
three files with similar fields (different names) that he wants to merge
with a QRYSLT (not join)  to read through an RPG program. I vaguely
remember trying something like this once by joining a file to itself.
