Mello Paul, It is still faster in many cases to physically sort the data rather than using an index to provide a 'pretend' sort. I am not defending FMTDTA per se (I tend to agree with James K here) but processing physically sorted data is the fastest database processing you will get -- mostly due to the ability to block the data. You can use FMTDTA or RGZPFM or OPNQRYF and CPYFRMQRYF or SQL to create the sorted data. Often the time absorbed by the sort is more than recouped by sequential processing. My most dramitic example is 48 hours reduced to 12 hours!!! Regards, Simon Coulter. «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» «» FlyByNight Software AS/400 Technical Specialists «» «» Eclipse the competition - run your business on an IBM AS/400. «» «» «» «» Phone: +61 3 9419 0175 Mobile: +61 0411 091 400 «» «» Fax: +61 3 9419 0175 mailto: shc@flybynight.com.au «» «» «» «» Windoze should not be open at Warp speed. «» «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» //--- forwarded letter ------------------------------------------------------- > Date: Thu, 04 Feb 99 21:45:54 -0500 > From: "PaulMmn" <PaulMmn@ix.netcom.com> > To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com > Reply-To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com > Subject: Re: FMTSRC > > Back in my S/38 days the statistics were such that it was -faster- to run a > sort to merge 2 huge files togther than to copy them together and let the > system build an index. > > I have no idea if things are better or worse today. > > --Paul E Musselman > PaulMmn@ix.netcom.com +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
