Gads, I hate when this happens but a little voice said "redbooks ... redbooks" I searched a dusty shelf of old RedBooks and found "Writing SAA Applications for AS/400" GG24-3438 March 1990. Now I've never done this, but in section 4.4.2 Indicators: "If the file level keyword INDARA is specified in the DDS, all indicators defined in the record format(s) for the file are passed to and from the program in a separate indicator area, not in the record area." <<snip>> "If the INDARA in not specified, the indicators are included in the record area of the I/O buffer. ..... The application programmer does not have to worry about mapping these fields into additional variables defined within the program. For programmer productivity, this is a big bonus." Their words, not mine. :-) This may be a way of retrieving the indicator settings, don't know, never been there. James W.
