Changing the number of spool files allowed in a job is not only a big impact in OS/400, but would break a lot of other code also. Spool File numbers are always stored as 4 digits because that is their max size. And the command interpreter wont allow you to give it any more on a SPLNBR parm. So if the max where increased, every bit of code that deals with spool file would break. Given the very small number of things that actually hit this limit, I for one would NOT want this max changed. Instead, you could probably change how your application is working a little bit and not have the problem. One method (as previously mentioned) is to keep track of the number of SPLF's generated and resubmit when it gets to 9998 (leave 1 for the job log). You are not missing anything. There is currently a maximum of 9999 spool entries that can be associated with a given job; and the only work around for today is to start a new job or split the spool files across multiple jobs. If you were to make a formal request for extending this current limit I suspect your request would be, as they say, "Accepted" which indicates that IBM agrees with the request, a solution is desirable and feasible. I would not however anticipate such a change being right around the corner, and likewise would not expect to see it PTFed to whatever release you may be on now. To change the number of spool files is a decidedly non-trivial effort with impacts throughout the system.
