The issue is not with your e-mail addresses, it's that the AS400 SMTP
server uses the host/domain name you defined to declare itself to the
ISP's SMTP server. What you really need is a smart SMTP client that can
bypass the 400 SMTP server  (not in my opinion a quality mail server
anyway) and deliver mail directly to the ISP's server. Of course I know
of such a product but it's not sold as a stand alone mail product. I've
tried overriding the QATOCTCPIP file for SMTP before but it's hardwired
to use the file in QUSRSYS so no luck there.
You may want to consider using something like VPOP to do your mail
delivery - it's really cheap $35 - $150 dollars depending - and made for
this sort of dial up mail distribution.
