David,

It's up to you to decide how big a variable you think your program should
handle in one go. It's a balance between the average message length,
program size and the number of API calls. In the 2nd required parameter you
specify the maximum length to be returned and you code your variable to
this length.

When the variable is returned you use the lengths and offsets within the
variable itself navigate through it. When you've processed all the messages
returned you call the API again to get the next lot. How you actually code
the variable and navigate through it depends, of course, on the HLL you're
coding in.
