i haven't used visual age - we started with asna's visual rpg.  we have used it
for remote access windows access into the as/400 but you can also develop stand
alone applications with it.

asna provides manuals but you have to print them, or you can buy them extra (i
think).  they also have some sample applications, and a tutorial, called visual
rpg for smarties.
