Jim, I agree with that but suspect that just because "we" want beefier IO, it does not mean we will get it. Remember that client side safety was/is one of the selling points of Java. ______________________________________________________________________ ___ Howard Weatherly hweatherly@dlis.dla.mil howard.weatherly@ctg.com hweath@ibm.net X4324 <<RPG, COBOL & JAVA>>

To All: From my standpoint, JAVA will be required because the client server model has moved from the WAN/LAN to the internet. In order to produce applications that can live in the environment, we will have to use JAVA. There are two very significant problems. First, the AS/400 version will need to produce an object similar to the RPG and COBOL compilers before JAVA can be used too much on the AS/400. Second, file I/O and interfaces to SQL need to be beefed up quite a bit. (Screen handling outside of a browser is interesting as well). Just like when Synon and AS/SET came out and predicted the end of 3GL coding, JAVA will not be able to push RPG and COBOL out, but because of the emphasis IBM is putting on JAVA, better get your coffee cup warmed up! One question: Where does the rumor that IBM will have RPG and COBOL produce byte code for browsers stand?
