Endre Try going to www.News400.com They have a thing on AS/400 in education right now with a Forum. Post your question There. I will forward your message to Partners In Education(PIE) in IBM. Buy a brand new 170 at the entry price. Get the compilers you need. You are not doing production entry on this machine, just batch compiles. Get SQL, RPG, COBOL, PDM, etc. The base machine should be fine to teach from. Don't go used machine, We really don't need you teaching old stuff to new kids. You can even expand into Java and C++ on the machine. Get VA/Java, and VA/RPG , CODE/400. Show them what the machine can do, not what it used to do. John Carr EdgeTech Have Classes, Will Travel ------------------------- >From: Endre Enyedy <e_enyedy@netside.net> Hello all: I am seeking the considered opinion of this list, re this situation: I work ( part-time at) at a vocational school, where we teach computer programming (intro - basic - c - cobol, etc). I proposed to add RPG /400 and IV to our current syllabus - idea well received. I even proposed a small (used) 400 to be used for RPG, using existing PCs as workstations. But: The President (owner) consulted with one of his friends , who just happens to be an IBM bussiness partner - and this guy suggested (and quoted) a machine for over $ 50,000, and this figure is just murdering my project. In the opinon of all you Sages, what would be the really minimum configuration to propose and fight for ?
