John, After reading your post, I stepped through an old program I wrote that uses RTNDTA to make sure that it did a WRITE format 1, EXFTM format 2, READ Format 1. The display is opened as share(*Yes). The READ and EXFMT are in different programs which must be why it works, either that or I am not understanding the question. To do this sort of thing today I use the dynamic screen APIs. It's just that the system gives you an error when it sees you making that type of mistake....
