Don't start warr about Cobol >run unit, pls. :))))) When I attempted to execute ILE programs that use bound calls and ACTGRP(*CALLER) from OPM jobs (triggers), I had random errors in production caused by service programs not being found. These problems went away as soon as I specified a named activation group. Apparently some of the support required for object or pointer resolution is not always available. The programs will run successfully without creating an activation group most of the time, but are not reliable. I haven't tried this in a while (last time was at V3R1M0). Possibly there was a PTF that fixed this, but I've never seen anything that said it was now OK, and since my bad experience with it, I've always recommended against doing it.
