Mmmmm..... I may have been thinking about two different things here..

In the Old Days, you had to code 'A' in the file spec to Add records to an
existing file (defined as Update, I believe).  UPDATE/ADD does ring a
bell...

If you coded the file as OUTPUT, you would end up with a default CLRPFM
before the program began executing.
