" Have you ever ditched Unix for another OS and were glad you did?" There's a new infoworld forum. It called "What's wrong with Unix". Has anyone switched from Unix to the AS/400? Why did you switch? Why is the AS/400 better suited for business computing than Unix? Here's a snippet from Nick's editorial. At http://forums.infoworld.com/threads/get.cgi?77566 ---------------------------------- But we haven't spent enough time asking what's wrong with Unix and when should we avoid it? When is it unwise to choose Solaris, all of the BSDs (such as FreeBSD, NetBSD, BSDI, and so on), Linux, AIX, Unixware, etc? Have you ever ditched Unix for another OS and were glad you did? Why? What were the benefits? Now that even commercial Unix prices have dropped so much, would those benefits still apply if you made the same trade today? "" Most of all, I'd like for us to dig a little deeper than the canned arguments people tend to wage against Unix. We all know which OS has the most popular desktop applications. We all know that the Unix command set can be more difficult to learn. We all know that some people prefer the Windows or Macintosh GUIs. Instead of beating those dead horses, I'd rather we address any problems with the real guts of Unix -- is Unix threading inferior for some tasks? Is there a lack of thread-safe tools? Is the owner/user/group system obsolete? Would NT-style access control lists help Unix or just bog it down needlessly? As great as products like SAMBA may be, are the file system incompatibilities between the Unix and Windows too serious to make Unix the best possible glue in a Windows desktop world? Unix isn't perfect -- so give its flaws your best shot, and let's see what is left standing. "" ----------------------- Just thought some of us may have worked on both platforms and can discuss why one is better. See you at the forum if you can contribute.
