Jon,

The general rule of thumb is to make the sending program send the entire 
initialized length by declaring the parameter variable one character longer 
than what is required and putting a character in that last position. The called 
program need not declare the extra byte. This only pertains to submitted CALL 
commands, since referenced values will always be correct.
