i'm not sure i followed what you did, but i've never had any configurations get 
lost.

we have done this, but not recently.  you need to set up a separate line 
description,
referencing the same hardware, and then a controller description, referencing 
the line
description you just set up.

the line description that is active will be that that is varied on.

since you are going appn, you don't need to set up devices.  they will set 
themselves up.
but there is something in the controller that you need to set (i can't remember 
exactly
now - i'm at home), and also be sure you have enough virtual devices to 
configure in the
system values.
