You cannot update prior to getting a lock on your input (READ, CHAIN, etc), so you must use the error indicator on the input operation. I would at least put that into a DO loop with an error indicator. There is a field in the SDS that has the error message containing the user who has the lock (I do not have the from/to positions handy). I would suggest that inside the loop, you display that message in a window and ask the user if they want to retry or cancel.
