Richard, In a message dated 98-09-01 11:04:49 EDT, you write: > It's been a while since I evaluated any of these packages. Me too (thank Heavens)! > I guess I shouldn't have been so confident in my "none of them > externalize your input specs" comments. If I remember correctly, only Quantum did and they weren't a major player. I'm not surprised you hadn't heard of them. Quantum could even convert #GSORTs that weren't ADDROUT into OPNQRYF statements! Back when there was enough money in /36 conversions to justify the license fees, we used to use Quantum, ESX ProStart, _and_ 36 migration tools to analyze our clients' systems. Each had their own strengths and weaknesses, although I don't recall which had which other than Quantum's externalization abilities. At least one of these would convert O specs for file I/O into UPDATE and WRITE statements, but the results were "iffy" at best. I don't recall _any_ of them creating printer files, but it _has_ been a while. <<snip>> > Some of the most fun I've had in this industry (and by the industry I > do mean the bizness :) is writing utilities. If I only had more time > to do more of that stuff. Me too! I'd never want to be a full-time systems programmer, but writing a little utility now and then to make my life easier and break the monotony of applications programming is a kick in the pants -- couldn't be easier than on the AS/400, either ;-)!
