It's been a while since I evaluated any of these packages.

I guess I shouldn't have been so confident in my "none of them
externalize your input specs" comments.

A couple of years ago we developed a little utility that would show
you each internal description of a program, let you enter a PF name
and library and would replace each field of the file that matched the
external file desc with a renamed external field - but if it didn't
match, it just marked it for later attention.

Didn't get around to output specs though.  that was a little tougher
because the field being output to a file many times had no relation to
the file whatsoever.

Some of the most fun I've had in this industry (and by the industry I
do mean the bizness :) is writing utilities.  If I only had more time
to do more of that stuff.
