My company specializes in EDI on the AS400.  I have been doing this a long
time.  My favorite product is Harbinger (Premenos) Trusted Link/400.  It is
a great product.  Also as far as VANs, it really depends on your trading
partners requirements.  Certainly EDI is simpler to do if you don't have to
manage the comm piece.
I can answer any questions that you have including using a PC to front end
an AS400.  you can contact me off line if you like.
Also, I resell the Harbinger/Premenos product, but also do work on Gentran
and many other EDI xlators.
