Venu, On your system, create the logical file, compile your RPG with a K in the F spec. After the pgm is compiled, you can delete the logical file. It is not needed at runtime as you are doing an ovrdbf to the opnqryf. But this is not an efficient way. My requirement is as follows : I have a database file that stores some date fields in my application. This database file typically has Lib+Filename, datefield name, its format and other info. I have another list of filenames. For each filename entry I am generating the DSPFFD outfile. For each filename entry in this list, there can be more than one record in the first database file. (if a file contains 3 date fields, my first database will have 3 records of this file). I will get the date field record from first database. Then I search for this Lib+File+Fld in the DSPFFD outfile. This search presently I am doing straight reads of the outfile. Instead, I am thinking of directly doing a CHAIN to the DSPFFD outfile with Lib+File+Fld as the keylist. So I tried to define the OPNQRYF with Keylist and then calling the RPG with 'K' specified in the F specs. But it is not getting around. If I go for straight reads of Dspffd Outfile, then imagine a situation wherein the date field is defined as the last field in the file. And if the file has around 100 fields, then I have to do 100 reads to get the correct dspffd record. The situation will be worse if the file has 100 fields, out of which 3 are date fields and are defined at the end. I will be doing lot of unnecessary Reads (first 100, next 99, next 98...so on). I want to avoid this. I can create an external LF for the QADSPFFD file. That means, I have to have this external LF object always with the program. This also I want to avoid. If there is no way around, then I may have to opt for this. Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
