As an Old(er) Fogey, I come from the school where you had to code your own
scan routines:

In general, you MOVEA your character variable to an array of 1-byte alpha
elements.  Set the index to the last element in the array, and compare for
blank.  Decrement the index, and repeat until you find a non-blank
character, or you run out of array.

Even once IBM came out with scanning opcodes in CL and RPG I often found it
easier to code my own rather than try to find the manual and figure out the
calling sequence.  I guess I've gotten lazy, however... I use the op codes
now.  (:
