Hey! I tried that (command with variable length parameter) a while back, but was not successful. The command was RTVAPPVAL, modeled on RTVSYSVAL. Give a value name, and get the value back. The command program (RPGIV) defined the output parameter with the length of the longest value that could be requested. I was very careful to only change the positions of the output parameter that corresponded to the length of the requested APPVAL. The value returned was always garbled. I gave up after a short time.
