The ALTSEQ technique can come in handy when there is a requirement for   
minimal impact to an existing application.  For example, this approach   
has the advantage of requiring no data conversion.  If you are lucky,   
minimal program changes are required (new key list, new key field, etc.).   
 When windowing is the choice, ALTSEQ seems to me to be an attractive   
implementation technique.  No binary card decks required!  :)

Sometimes it's just too hard to get back to square one, although many   
times that is the "best" place to start.
