Joe,

You might want to look at the Synapse "Remote APPC"
product which was designed specifically for this task. 

Basically, Remote APPC uses a "server" PC which is 
attached to the AS/400 via LAN (TCP/IP or 802.2), SDLC 
or twinax.  The server can accomodate up to 16 dial-in 
async modems, and provides security options including 
encoded data, passwords, dial-back, date/time scheduling 
and caller ID.

Synapse's "WinAPPC Lite" 5250 client provides display 
and printer emulation at the remote end (but w/o file 
transfer, thus the "lite" designation), and is 
exceptionally easy to install and configure.  Plus, 
support is free for all Synapse products -- another 
reason you rarely see Synapse mentioned on this list.
