Perhaps that is why iv'e been so far off base on this.  Think it was 
the 38 that had 36 emulation.  But I have never had to deal with the 
36 so haven't paid to much attention.

No, it was the other way round. The S38 had been out for a while when 
my employer got his first S/36 right after they were released. I don't 
recall S36 emulation on the 38. There was a S/34 to S/38 conversion 
tool though. The AS/400 had S/36 emulation from day one. It was a big 
deal at the time, with much hoopla about how thoroughly beta sites had 
tested the 36EE for consistency with the "real" S/36.
