Jim,

I've got one client that has a decent practice for safeguarding their backup.
Every day someone makes a trip to the bank to make the daily deposit.  While
there, they rotate a set to a safety deposit box. Backups are done in the middle
of the night, that set goes to the company vault, the vault set goes to the 
bank,
the bank set comes back for the next backup.  The weekly SAVSYS goes to the
owners car where they melt in the heat. ;-)
