More than likely it is a V24 comm port, an ascii controller also has an RS232 interface.

Subject: RS232

This may seem like a silly question, but we are looking into purchasing a time keeping system that interfaces with a RS232 port on the AS/400.  We have a 510 2144 - Where is the RS232 port?  The person I spoke with from the time keeping system said that all AS/400's have this connection.  Where?

Thanks in advance.
