First, thanks to Bruce and Walden for your replies. Tom Liotta over in comp.sys.ibm.as400.misc mentioned that the CHKIN command might still be usable, since it will tell you if an object doesn't exist before it checks to see if the file system supports the CHKIN function. This is sufficient for what I need to do in this case, although I suppose it carries a risk that IBM could change the behavior in future releases.
