If the resource hit isn't that bad we'll but a CL wrapper around it to change the execution priority and let them run it interactively for display output, otherwise, for those cases that do not require a record selection, it gets submitted to the job queue. If the performance hit is negative, we create a "real" solution. We even created a black box program which puts up a panel which looks like the record selection panel used by RUNQRY and allows the user to enter criteria within OPNQRYF restrictions. They think they are running the query, but what the heck, their happy, we're happy, management is happy, the rest of the users of the system are happy, and what they don't know won't hurt them. IMHO, your debate touches on the "lazy programmer" category where their desire to be heroes creating solutions, because of their lack of big picture viewpoint, has an ongoing cost to all parties concerned that really, really, requires a little education to show them how "real" heroes create solutions. Trust me, they want to be heroes. They just need to learn who they are being a hero to. A single user, or the whole community. Once they get a taste of "Kudos" from a group they just might stop trying to serve a particular individual. BTW, once individuals learn they can get the ear of a developer, anarchy can easily set in. The developer becomes the pawn in their game. Good luck.
