No, everything is still externally-described.  Currently, if you want to read
into a data structure, you must use a program-described file, even if the
data structure is ext-desc.  Of course, coding the record length is the
downside.  In addition, support for keyed I/O is better for ext-desc files.

Hans,

Wouldn't that sort of defeat the purpose of externally described files? I'm not
registering a negative opinion, I'd just like to know what you have in mind.
What would you be able to do with them that is not currently possible with a
program described file and an externally described data structure?
