Scott & Doc,

Yes, VisualAge C++ does produce AS/400 executable Objects.

There are 2 components you need: The as/400 side from your
AS/400 software suplier. I do not remember the product ID you
need to get (and Code/400 is included!).

You will also need either the Windows or OS/2 version of Visual
Age C++. This can be gotten from IBM Direct.

You can keep your long file names in the source, but your *PGM
object will have to conform to normal AS/400 naming conventions.

If your application is already coded in C++, then the VA/C++ is
probably an easyier route than a Java Conversion. Java is a sub
set of C++, so there are some things that are not supported in
Java. And a few Java things that C++ doesn't support.

Another nice thing about VA/C++ is you can target down to V3R2.
 With Java, it is V4R2 only. And not many of your customers are
on V4R2 yet (unless they are captive).

And any of your WinNT user interface stuff will NOT move over.
 If your application is console based, then it should not be
terribly difficult to port to the AS/400. If however it
includes a full UI, then you will have to do some major work to
get it across.

And I suspect Java wont help you as I've heard (could easily be
wrong) that the Java AWT is NOT available in AS/400 Java. And
it is the AWT that provides the UI for Java.

I do believe there is an IBM product called something like
VisualAge C++ for AS/400.

If I remember correctly you develop the C++ code on the PC,
but compile and run it on the AS/400.

That is all the info I have on it. You may want to do some more
research if interested.

Hi All

We have developed a set of programs in C++ under Windows NT. As
the
programs are developed under Windows NT, they have long
filenames.

Now, it's time to convert the code to the AS/400. We're
planning on using
VisualAge Java (as I don't know of any other tool out there that
does C++
for the AS/400), and we're wondering-- where are the compiled
 C++ programs
stored on the AS/400? Are they stored under the regular AS/400
file system
or the Isolated, er, Integrated File System? If they're stored
in the
regular AS/400 file system, what happens to the names of the
objects?  Do
they get mangled somehow?

Look after yerselves...

Thanks

-Doc
