%LEN returns the number of characters including blanks. To get number of chars excluding leading and trailing blanks, use %LEN(%TRIM(str)). %SIZE(%TRIM(str)) is not allowed, since %SIZE requires a variable name as the argument. %SIZE returns number of bytes occupied by the variable. I was thinking of %size. But will this return the number of characters? Or will it return the number of characters from the first non-blank to the last non blank? In this case the space after the comma is what I am asking about. 'Toronto, Canada' Will this be 14 or 15? I'm guessing 14. Would %size(%trim($char)) return the real value he was looking for? To get the field size you need to use %SIZE. -Walden -----Original Message----- From: mcsnet!midrange.com!midrange-l-owner@Mcs.Net [mailto:mcsnet!midrange.com!midrange-l-owner@Mcs.Net]On Behalf Of BVStone@Taylorcorp.com Sent: Thursday, March 12, 1998 6:19 PM To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: %TRIMR > -----Original Message----- > From: Rbbaird [SMTP:Rbbaird@premsys.com] > Sent: Thursday, March 12, 1998 3:22 PM > To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com > Subject: Re: %TRIMR > > Darlene K. CHECK and CHECKR should be used to get the starting and ending character posistions, and then uses these to get the start posistion. > hope this helps, > > rick > > "I'm not fat, I'm just big boned!" > +--- > | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! > | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. > | To unsubscribe from this list send email to > MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. > | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: > david@midrange.com > +--- +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- uucp +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
