Mail experts,

We are looking into options for sending E-mail from our AS/400. We would like
to send the mail directly to our GroupWise mail server. It looks like we have
several options. The first would be to use the AnyMail API's to send and
format our messages. This appears to work OK but in testing the mail sometimes
gets "lost". In some cases mail sent two days prior miraculously appears. It
is possible that this will clear up when the servers are started in a
controlled environment. The other option might be to use the API gateway
provided by GroupWise. This is a NLM that we should be able to connect to and
pass message requests.

In the end we would like to allow a program (ILE) to send a message as an
E-mail to a specified SMTP address. We need this to be reliable, performance
is not an issue. Looking at the AnyMail APIs I have some questions. With the
send mail API what is the 4 character message type? Is this *PRI, *BCC, etc.?
What about ASCII conversion, will I have to do this or does the API or one of
the exit programs do this? If I have to do this is there a translation table
defined for 7-bit ASCII or do I use QASCII?

Thanks for any guidance,

David Morris
