James I think I should comment on one part of your posting. "So long as the intermediate code is captured for study, I think it's a wonderful learning tool. And who knows, once we study the code some may decide that a single RPG EVAL statement is easier, more cost effective, than coding the equavalent JAVA statements. Or some may get up the courage to give up the familiar." The proposal is to generate Java bytecode - _not_ Java source (although source can possibly be derived from the bytecode). We did a trial of generating Java, but the resulting code was so ugly that it would be unmaintainable (you know, like MAPICS <vbg>). By generating bytecode we enable the executable to run on any web enabled device. In addition, as you want to add Java to your repetoir, you can create (or buy) Java beans and use them to extend the fuctionality of the application. Over time it would be conceivalbe that the entire application gradually moved to pure Java.
