Try hooking the printer to another machine (like a PC) and see if you can print from another tray. I had a devil of a time with a second hand 4029 until I realized that it wasn't being wrongly told to feed only from the top tray, but rather than the feed roller in the bottom was too worn to reliably pick up a sheet and the printer was giving up and trying the other tray in desperation. If you can get it to work properly off a PC, then try it again on the AS/400 (without turning the printer off, if possible, to avoid resetting the thing if the PC driver rearranged some settings).
